Kansas Carries On, Continues with 2011 Collegiate Symphony Tour to Raise Funds for College Music Programs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ROCK BAND KANSAS CONTINUES WITH ‘2011 COLLEGIATE SYMPHONY TOUR’ TO
RAISE FUNDS FOR COLLEGE MUSIC PROGRAMS/TOUR PRESENTED BY D’ADDARIO
& COMPANY

After the groundbreaking and universally successful 2010 KANSAS Collegiate Symphony Tour, legendary rock band KANSAS is not only continuing, but expanding the tour for the fall of 2011. The 2011 KANSAS Collegiate Symphony Tour will again
help raise funds and awareness for college and university music programs.

Original member and drummer, Phil Ehart had this to say about last year’s concerts. “KANSAS and all the school symphonies just hit it off big time! The only people having more fun than us were all the students playing on stage with us! And considering all the money that was raised to help the music departments, everyone considered it a real success! We know this year will be bigger and better!”

The 2010 tour, which was inspired by their DVD “There’s Know Place Like Home,” saw KANSAS joined by conductor Larry Baird, and performing concerts with symphonies from the University of Alabama; University of Texas, San Antonio; Wichita State University; Oklahoma State University; Hardin-Simmons University; and Truman State University. Eugene Dowdy, Music Director and Conductor at University of Texas, San Antonio raved, “This was the biggest show my students have ever played – there were people everywhere! This is a visionary collaboration that resonates on every level…it is fantastic!”

Presenting sponsor D’Addario & Company will once again be joining KANSAS in their effort to raise funds and awareness for college and university music programs. D’Addario, the world’s largest musical products accessory manufacturer, brings products to market under the brand names D’Addario; Planet Waves; Rico Reeds; and Evans/PureSound/HQ percussion products. Jay Bulen, Chair of the Truman State University Music Department explains, “The support from D’Addario is tremendous. In the fall of 2011, we will have two new scholarships for incoming string players because of this. It will help us build our music program.”

“D’Addario & Company is excited, once again, to be the presenting sponsor for the 2011 KANSAS Collegiate Symphony Tour,” commented D’Addario Vice President of Sales & Marketing, David Via. “Last year’s concerts were exciting, once-in-a-lifetime, events for the participating institutions and their students. Our scholarship and product donation is but a small way we can assist, along with KANSAS, in providing some much needed funding assistance to schools who are faced with departmental cut-backs,” Via stated.

With their self-titled first album released in 1974, KANSAS went on to become one of the decade’s most popular rock acts – issuing classic rock albums such as 1976’s ‘Leftoverture’ and 1977’s ‘Point of Know Return,’ along with the hit singles “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust In the Wind,” and “Point of Know Return.” The band – which in addition to Ehart, is comprised of singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarist Rich Williams, bassist Billy Greer, and violinist David Ragsdale – continue to tour in front of large and enthusiastic audiences and to this day remain a fixture on classic rock radio.

Houston Show Reviews - Stafford Center

When a band like Metallica plays live backed by a symphony orchestra, it's understandably a matter of notable oddity. However, when classic rock group Kansas did exactly that last Saturday night at the Stafford Centre, it was a completely natural and perfect fit.

Comments: No one seemed to mind the single-digit temperatures outside as the sold-out crowd filled the Topeka Performing Arts Center in downtown Topeka, Kan. to see their very own hometown boys, the band known as Kansas. Those attending the show were treated to a very unique Kansas performance as the band was joined on stage by the talented Topeka Symphony Orchestra. Fans came from as far away as Germany, Australia and the U.K. to join other die-hard Kansas fans from around the nation for the Kansas show, always the main event for annual gathering of the Wheatheads. The show’s opening was absolutely brilliant. Violinist David Ragsdale started the 90-minute set by making his way up the center aisle while playing the intro to “Magnum Opus.” The crowd was quite impressed as evidenced by the sound of the applause, and it would seem to many that although Robby Steinhart, the original violinist for the band is still very much missed by many, the chemistry between David and the rest of the band is undeniable.

How David Ragsdale, the violinist of Kansas, dressed for the progressive rock band's concert Friday night with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra captured the moment. He wore blue jeans and a tuxedo tailcoat. The performance in the Topeka Performing Arts Center was indeed a white T-shirt and tails affair. Behind Ragsdale and the rest of Kansas — drummer Phil Ehart, bassist Billy Greer, keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Rich Williams — the symphony was seated on a riser.

Yes, you will do a double-take.

The debut CD from Native Window features four of the five members of the rock band, Kansas.  That’s right, four of the five.

Kansas fans will speculate.  And to make matters more interesting, Native Window will open for Kansas on tour.  Yes, another double-take.  It is Kansas personnel without Steve Walsh.

This cooperative effort began with the realization that Kansas knew they could no longer expect ample writing contributions of former member, Kerry Livgren and current member, Steve Walsh.  Both writers have indicated they may write an occasional song or two but they were basically done writing any album length material for Kansas.  “The four of us decided that we were not done yet,” said drummer Phil Ehart, “and Native Window was born to scratch that ‘new material itch’.”

Lincoln Show Reviews - Lincoln Star Journal

Kansas bass player Billy Greer called the band’s concert Thursday night at Pershing Center an “experiment in progress.” Why? For the first time in 10 years the legendary rock ‘n’ rollers shared a stage with a symphony orchestra. Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Larry Baird, teamed with Kansas on a 90-minute, 12-song set that went over well despite some technical glitches. If anything, it was sight to behold.
